What to Expect When You Hire a Personal Chef for Weekly Meal Prep in Portland
Most people who are curious about hiring a personal chef never reach out. Not because they're not interested, but because they're not sure how it works. Is it complicated? Do you have to be home? How much input do you actually have?
The process is more straightforward than most people expect. Here's exactly what it looks like from first contact to a full fridge.
Step 1: The Consultation Call
It starts with a 20-minute call. No commitment, no pressure.
Chef Rafi and his team use this time to learn about your household: how you eat, what dietary protocols you follow, what your week looks like, and what you're hoping to get out of the service. You'll also hear more about how the team operates, their background, and how meals are built around each client.
It's a two-way conversation. By the end, both sides have a clear sense of whether the service is a good fit.
Step 2: The Intake Process
If our service feels like the right fit for your family, we’ll proceed by sending over an intake form along with a few documents to review and sign. This is where the detail work happens. Dietary restrictions, preferences, household size, how many meals you need each week, and anything else that shapes how your service is structured.
This information becomes the foundation of everything that follows. The more specific you are, the more tailored your menus will be from day one.
Once everything is submitted and signed, your first cook date gets scheduled.
Step 3: Your Menu Proposal
The weekend before your first cook date, Chef Rafi and his team will send over a personalized menu proposal for you to review. This isn't a take-it-or-leave-it list. Menus are a collaborative experience. You review the options, make your selections, and request any adjustments.
All decisions are submitted by Sunday so the team has time to plan, source ingredients, and prepare before your cook date. Browse sample menus to get a sense of what a typical week might look like.
This rhythm repeats every week. You always know what's coming, and you always have input.
Step 4: Cook Day
On cook day, you have two options.
In-home service: Chef Rafi and his team come to your home, bring all the ingredients needed for the cook date, and cook the full week's menu in your kitchen. On your first day, we will assess your glass container management and make any recommendations. You don't need to be there. By the time our chef leaves, your fridge is stocked with labeled, portioned meals stored in reusable glass containers, and your kitchen is clean.
Same-day delivery: Prefer not to have anyone in your home? Meals are prepared in an ODA-certified commercial kitchen and delivered to your door the same day they're cooked and shopped for. Same quality, same personalization, different setup.
Either way, you come home to a week's worth of food built specifically for your household.
What Happens Every Week After That
The service finds its rhythm quickly. Each weekend you receive a new menu proposal, make your selections by Sunday, and your cook date runs the same way every week, multiple times a week, or on a structured monthly schedule.
As the team gets to know your household better, the menus get sharper. Favorites get noted, preferences get refined, and the service becomes something your week is built around rather than something you have to think about.
For busy Portland families and professionals, that consistency is often the most valuable part. According to industry estimates, active households can reclaim fifteen or more hours per week when meal planning, shopping, and cooking are handled. That time compounds quickly.
